Three Anacostia & Pacific Railroads Honored with "Jake" Awards for Above Average Safety

May 22, 2008

CHICAGO, IL – The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) recently honored three Anacostia and Pacific Company, Inc. (APCI) railroads with safety awards. The Northern Lines Railway (NLR) earned a “Jake Certificate with Distinction” for achieving a performance of zero Federal Railroad Administration reportable injuries or accidents during year 2007. This is the second year in a row that NLR has received this recognition.

Two other APCI railroads were honored for the second year in a row with “Jake Certificates” for achieving a Frequency/Severity Index (FSI) for reportable injuries and accidents that was better than the industry average during the year 2007. APCI railroads that achieved “Jake Certificate” recognition include:

  • Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad
  • New York & Atlantic Railway

“Employees on each of these railroads should be proud of this honor. It is a reflection of the focus, leadership, and personal responsibility that each person has demonstrated to eliminate unsafe work practices and conditions. “Through improving our work practices, looking out for each other, and following railroad rules these successes were achieved,” says APCI’s Tom Leopold, Director of Safety, Operating Procedures and Evaluation.

“During 2008, we are building on these successes to further improve our safety performance and eliminate incidents and injuries. Thank you for the great safety work last year and for your focus on safety. Congratulations!”
