Railroad workers are also covered by the federal Railroad Retirement Act, under which compensation is subject to railroad retirement taxes in lieu of a Social Security deduction. Even though railroad employees and employers pay somewhat more in railroad retirement payroll taxes than they would under Social Security, they earn higher retirement benefits compared to social security and, under certain circumstances, can retire at an earlier age with full benefits. Freight Railroad Locomotive Maintenance Technician [NYA]

Qualified U.S. Military Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

Salary: Depends on experience; starts at $26.55/hour.  Hourly rate increases as additional qualification and certification training and tests are successfully completed.

Position Purpose. This position is responsible for the efficient inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and installation of locomotive mechanical systems and electrical systems such as diesel engines, motors, generators, wheels and truck repair, air brake, wiring and lighting systems, and other mechanical and electrical components to ensure conformance with FRA, AAR, company, and customer specifications.

Salary: 
  • Trainees start at $29.47/hour.
  • After additional training, the hourly rate increases to $32.01.
  • Maximum hourly pay rate is $40.16 for fully qualified locomotive engineers.
Job Profile:  Candidates must pass an intensive new hire training program. Conductors control locomotive movement & operate vehicles, inspect train cars & locomotives, and handle track switches in compliance with all applicable government regulations, company rules and safe work procedures. Work is done on uneven walking surfaces on various shifts & in all types of weather.
