LIRC – Louisville & Indiana Railroad

The Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC) was formed in March 1994 to acquire 106 miles of rail line between Indianapolis and Louisville. LIRC connects with CSX, NS, INRD, and PAL railroads. The line serves numerous major companies and an efficient inland port facility. LIRC has experienced significant organic and new growth with emerging markets. We are flexible and can pivot based on market demands.

LIRC was humbled to receive the 2024 Silver Military Friendly® Employer designation. For several years, we have made a concerted effort to hire employees with military experience and have veterans in roles from hourly employees to the senior level.

For more information about our railroad, reference the LIRC profile.

Utilities: All sites served with utilities to perimeter (including Gigabit-speed fiber)

This shovel-ready industrial park is located along US 31 one mile from I-65 Exit 76 near Edinburgh, Indiana (part of the Columbus, Indiana MSA, and Bartholomew County, Indiana). The property features all utilities to the perimeter (including Gigabit-speed fiber), industrial zoning, TIF, and other local incentive potential, and some parcels can offer rail service via Louisville & Indiana RR.

A very unique feature of the industrial park is that the end-user will have access to one of three electric utility providers depending on the selected parcel, as the site is split-served by Duke Energy, Hoosier Energy (REMC), and Edinburgh Municipal (IMPA).  The parcels at the corner of US 31 and 800 N, are also a recent recipient of the Duke Energy Site Readiness Certification.

All parcels are privately owned by one of three separate owners (Al-Anna Properties to the north and Meadowlawn Industrial and Force Holdings to the south), with parcels ranging in size from 7 acres up to 153 contiguous acres among 358 total available acres.

History

LIRC was formed in March 1994 to acquire 106 miles of rail line between Indianapolis and Louisville from its former owner Conrail.

Leading up to 2012 many improvements were made along the LIRC to support the demands of new and organic growth. The most notable project was the Southwind Upgrade, which commenced in 2014. In April 2015, the STB approved the plan between CSXT and LIRC, which allowed both railroads to entered into a Joint Use Operating Agreement in June 2015. The agreement gave CSXT a non-exclusive freight railroad operating easement over the LIRC and, in exchange, CSXT would fund improvements over the LIRC main track.

The Southwind improvements included replacing the 1930’s era 130# jointed rail with 136# continuous welded rail (CWR), new ties, added two new 10,000 ft. sidings, and replaced a critical bridge. The 2018 completion of this project allowed LIRC to increase from 25 mph to 49 mph and improve its railcar capacity from 263,000 lbs. gross weight on rail to an industry standard of 286,000 lbs. Respectively, the improvements allow speed to market and our customers to maximize their shipping weights offering greater economic advantages vs. other logistic modes.

In 2018 LIRC, in partnership with INDOT, began upgrading the warning devices at its crossings. Since this program began, LIRC has partnered in two overpasses being built and with 77 grade crossings receiving upgraded warning devices and another 11 scheduled for 2023.

In 2019, LIRC was awarded Railway Age Short Line of the Year.
