Railroad workers are also covered by the federal Railroad Retirement Act, under which compensation is subject to railroad retirement taxes in lieu of a Social Security deduction. Even though railroad employees and employers pay somewhat more in railroad retirement payroll taxes than they would under Social Security, they earn higher retirement benefits compared to social security and, under certain circumstances, can retire at an earlier age with full benefits. Eligibility for railroad retirement benefits is based on an employee’s age and months of service in the railroad industry. Additional information is available at www.rrb.gov.
